Guest Speaker Bruce Schattenburg

We have invited Bruce Schattenburg to bring us up-to-date on the “tax cap” legislation. Not only is Bruce the Managing Director of The Sacks Group and a Founding Member of The USSA, he is the President of the Florida Yacht Brokers Association (FYBA).
Last year, during the early 2009 legislative session, FYBA and the Marine Industries Association of South Florida (MIASF) worked with a lobbyist and other trade associations to help introduce House of Representative Bill, HR469: the Maritime Full Employment Act, which caps the sales and use tax on a boat sold in Florida at $18,000. The Bill passed through the House with 116 yeas to 0 nays. Unfortunately, the bill did not have time to be heard or voted on in the Senate during the 2009 legislative session.

Joined by Jason Dunbar, FYBA’s point-person for the “tax cap” legislation, they will help us understand how FYBA and MIASF members are currently participating in a study of show how a competitive tax rate will keep vessels and jobs in Florida, in the USA! They are also contributing to fundraising for legislators who are sympathetic to our industry. They are hopeful a Bill will be introduced in the Florida legislature during the 2010 session that will help the state compete with neighboring states and nations.

Come join us! Find out what FYBA is doing and how we can support their efforts. Timely information as we look forward the opening of the legislature and the beginning of the year. We want large yachts to stay! We need the economic energy that they bring.

The Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show approaches quickly (February 11-15, 2010) and we’ll have an update on too! And don’t forget about St. Maarten at the end of January!
