2008-2009 Advocacy

Committee Goal: To be an advocate for issues that affect superyachts (24m/80’ or greater) and the businesses serving them.

Surveys conducted by the USSA revealed the five top issues were:

• Increased confusion with what is perceived as inconsistently enforced U.S. regulations
• A shortage of qualified crew, particularly engineers with U.S. citizenship
• A shortage of suitable berthing for large vessels in U.S. ports
• Longshoreman/Seafarer status for contractors
• Impact of EPA regulations regarding alternative fuels.

To address issues the advocacy committee is responsible for:

• Maintaining  a methodology/discipline to identify the potential advocacy issues affecting the industry
• Apprising the Board and membership of the ramifications and finally recommend (or not) that an issue be adopted as an USSA advocacy issue
• Managing the advocacy efforts including fiscal control
• Coordinating efforts with the lobbyists of other associations and industry stakeholders
• Keeping the membership apprised of advocacy efforts and results
• Working with the Marketing Committee to communicate with all stakeholders.

The USSA committee will use this space to provide information, to share experiences and to collaborate on issues that affect superyachts.
