The 65th annual Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS), held from October 30 to November 3, 2024, on Florida’s Southeast Coast, hosted Australia’s largest-ever contingent at the world’s most prominent in-water boat show. Established in 1959, FLIBS has become a premier global event, featuring some of the world’s largest and most luxurious superyachts. Spanning over three million square feet of exhibition space across seven locations, the show attracted over 100,000 visitors, nearly half of whom traveled from outside Florida.
In a dynamic collaboration, Superyacht Australia (SYA) and the Australian International Marine Export Group (AIMEX) partnered with Tourism Fiji and Tahiti Tourisme to present the diverse offerings of the South Pacific’s superyacht and marine sector. The Australian delegation, representing SYA and AIMEX, included Aurora Yacht Logistics, City of Gold Coast, Coral Sea Marina, Carbon Game Towers International, Eighth Degree South, Illumi Vases, Marine Air Flow International, Marine Structures, Melanesian Luxury Yachts, Southport Yacht Club, Superyacht Group Great Barrier Reef, The Superyacht People, and The Textile and Design Studio.
Highlights of the Australian Presence
The collaboration extended to Fiji’s Port Denarau Marina, Yacht Help Fiji, and Nawi Island Marina, along with Tahiti Tourisme partners Tahiti Private Expeditions and Seal Superyachts Tahiti. Fijian culture was on vibrant display through daily performances by Fijian Warriors and traditional kava tastings, adding a cultural dimension to the South Pacific Superyachting Stand.
Australia’s Gold Coast led a notable Trade Mission, with seven Gold Coast companies—all SYA and AIMEX members—presenting their exceptional offerings on the global stage. This initiative highlighted the Sister City relationship between the Gold Coast and Fort Lauderdale while promoting business opportunities. Additionally, the Gold Coast’s role as a Silver Sponsor at the International Superyacht Society (ISS) Awards Night further underscored its commitment to the global superyacht industry.
Major Exhibits and Partnerships
Key AIMEX members made significant impressions at the show. Riviera showcased 11 boats and marked the launch of its 6000th vessel during the show’s finale, attended by Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis. Maritimo displayed three vessels, and Carbon Game Towers featured its innovative designs. Other AIMEX members, including Muir Engineering and VEEM, showcased their capabilities in collaboration with international partners.
SYA strengthened its relationship with the U.S. Superyacht Association (USSA), participating in the USSA Destinations Luncheon and leveraging the USSA Sky Lounge for networking opportunities. SYA CEO David Good received the inaugural International Industry Partner Award at the USSA Annual General Meeting, recognizing his contributions to the global superyacht community.
Celebrating Marine Conservation
The International SeaKeepers Society hosted its annual gala dinner, emphasizing progress in South Pacific marine conservation, led by Melissa White, South Pacific Director. The evening honored Guy Harvey as 2024 SeaKeeper of the Year and Shireen Rahimi as the 2024 NextGen Awardee, alongside the Discovery Fleet’s accomplishments.
Closing Networking Opportunities
The event concluded with the South Pacific Superyachting Stand Networking Drinks, where guests enjoyed Australian wines and valuable networking opportunities. Reflecting on the event, David Good commented, “Fort Lauderdale is a great show for our members, with both superyacht destination marketing and Australian marine manufacturers gaining equal benefits from exhibiting. The Australian boxing kangaroo has a big impact, as the Australian reputation is very strong.”
