Michael Karcher
The South Florida maritime attorney who drafted the original articles of incorporation — and helped put the words “Super Yacht” in a non-profit's name.
Why I became a founding member
I am a South Florida maritime attorney and I was asked to help draft the original articles of incorporation of the U.S. Super Yacht Association, Inc., and its formation as a Florida Non-Profit Corporation, and to assist with drafting the original bylaws.
What I'm most proud of
My proudest accomplishment was assisting in getting the association recognized as a “non-profit corporation” with the words “Super Yacht” in the title.
What the USSA brought to my business
The association put me in touch with various members of the yacht business. The networking opportunities were — and continue to be — very worthwhile. Besides the business aspects, we've had a lot of fun getting together.
What I'd like to see in the coming years
I would like to see USSA continue with its educational outreach to members of the yachting community. Along with the networking opportunities, we should continue providing information to our members, as well as the education we are giving to our local and national representatives — teaching them about the yacht business.
A note on USSA history
USSA has members who are among the giants in the yachting industry. What started as a small group along the 17th Street Causeway in Fort Lauderdale has grown into its lofty-sounding name and now has great recognition among the marine community and other major boating organizations. The association has brought together some of the major players in the industry, forming a cohesive United States group on the world market — and we've had a good time doing it as well.
